Reflective Blog #7

I have been a technology instructor in one form or another for the past 13 years in a face to face format. I enjoy distance learning and want to bring this to my department. My department of 4 software trainers services the entire Dallas County Community College District composed of 7 separate campuses and three service or business centers. In our classes we get a mix of computer literate and not so literate students who often have to travel to other campuses for the training. I have always been aware the more literate students are held back by the students who have trouble moving a mouse. These students would benefit from online training.
The learning objective I developed is part of a project I am trying to instigate at work so those more computer literate employees can take the training at their own pace from their desktops.  GroupWise is the district’s default email program and our employees benefit from learning how to more effectively use the software.  Our district already uses a rich LMS with supplemental programs such as the integrated instant messaging program, Pronto. Since these technologies are already implemented and supported by the district, I felt comfortable using them. In my department, we use Captivate to product online tutorials and I find it user friendly. Our department has also started producing these tutorials for other departments we support and have found wide acceptance and appreciation of the format.
I can better see the big picture now, and feel comfortable instituting these initiatives in my department. I am very excited and see substantial benefits to my college district by using these online technologies. They would also serve as a model for online instructors to help them see the possibilities.
